Emergency in Sri Lanka

Emergency in Sri Lanka

Colombo – India’s strategically important southern country Sri Lanka has declared emergency for 10 days following communal violence in the country. The country witnessed violent clashes between Buddhist and Muslims in Kandy district yesterday, after which government declared state of emergency today, to prevent it spreading in other parts of country.

There is increasing tension between two communities since last year. Buddhist hardliners are accusing Muslims of forcing conversion. They have also opposed giving shelter to Rohingya Muslims who fled from Myanmar last year. Meanwhile Sri Lanka government has sent troops and security forces to Kandy in order to restore normalcy. Action is sought against those who used social media for fanning communal tensions.
