Ashok Chavan gets relief

Mumbai – Former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan received big relief from high court in Adarsh case today. Bombay High Court set aside the sanction granted to CBI by the state’s governor C Vidyasagar Rao to prosecute Ashok Chavan in the case. The Adarsh housing society scam had created major political trouble for Chavan costing him the Chief Minister’s chair. Congress also faced public wrath over the scam and lost the 2014 assembly elections, in which Adarsh has become major election plank.

The High Court observed that CBI failed to produce any fresh evidence against Chavan though it claimed to have such evidence. However, a division bench of Justice Ranjit More and Justice Sadhna Jadhav found that it failed to produce fresh evidence. The court observed that the material presented by CBI in front of the then governor Rao were not credible evidence against former chief minister.

High court’s ruling is seen as great relief to Ashok Chavan as well as Congress. Ashok Chavan reacted to the ruling as ‘truth has prevailed’. On the other hand, CBI turned red faced on second consecutive day. After 2G case, it found itself at receiving end in Adarsh case.
